What is an Early College?

An Early College is an educational format in which students are able to receive both their high school diploma and up to an associates degree in college.   At ASM Tech, this will be a five year program.

Is it free?

Students who participate in ASM Tech will receive free tuition and books during their fourth and fifth years.  During their third year (11th grade), they will enroll in college as a dual enrollment student through their local high school which will also cover their tuition costs that year.  After their fifth year, ASM Tech will no longer provide funds for students, but will help in teaching them and guiding them through the financial aid process.

Can I get a degree when I'm finished?

Yes.  Each student will have the opportunity to earn up to an associate's degree.

What kind of students is this open to?

ASM Tech is open to a broad range of students.  Students will need to have at least a 2.2 cumulative GPA, be able to reach the set scores on the COMPASS test, and be on track to graduate.  ASM Tech is specifically for students interested in a career that would fall under the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) umbrella.

Can I still participate in activities at my local high school during my fourth year?

Yes, during your fourth year (12th grade) you will still be allowed to participate in activities, sports, clubs and dances.  You will want to express this with the College Success Coordinator when you are developing your class schedule to ensure that you make room for any activities you wish to participate in.  During your fifth year, you will not be allowed (unless given permission by your local school) to participate in these activities.

From which school will I graduate?

Although you will be allowed to walk in your local high school graduation ceremony, you will only receive a certificate of attendance.  Your diploma will be awarded by ASM Tech Early College High School.

What kind of support will there be available to students?

Students will enjoy having a personal support system in place when they enter ASM Tech.  Students will receive support from teachers, mentors and will be able to take advantage of all the services that West Shore Community College offers.  Students will also have the additional support of a College Success Coordinator who will guide them throughout their time in ASM Tech and in taking the next steps beyond graduation.

Is there an age requirement to apply?

Students apply during their 10th grade year.  In order to be accepted, they must be less than 20 years of age on September 1 of their fifth year.

Are there other school districts that ASM Tech is open to?

ASM Tech involves fourteen other area school districts that cover Mason, Lake, Oceana and Manistee counties.  Home school students will also have an opportunity to apply as well. Click here to see a list of our partner schools.
